Two Sundays ago in Ephesians 6:10-20 we learned about the spiritual war against evil, the absolute necessity of the armor of God, and our utter dependence on God for the strength that only he can provide. Before discussing these questions as a group, read through Ephesians 6:10-20 together.
- Why is our spiritual union with Christ so essential in the war against evil, both outward, the spiritual forces of evil, and inward, our own flesh (sinful nature)?
- Has this passage and/or the sermon changed your thinking about the ongoing reality of spiritual warfare?
- Paul tells us in verse 12 that our true enemies are not “flesh and blood,” which means other human beings. What are some ways that might be helpful for you to keep that in mind when interacting with unbelievers, and especially those who may seem like they are your spiritual enemies?
- In verse 15 he tells us to put on “the readiness given by the gospel of peace,” which means to be ready to share or proclaim the gospel, presumably to people who have not heard the gospel, or if they have heard it, to people who still do not believe it. Has this motivated you to be more deliberate in evangelism?
- What are some practical ways you can put on or take up truth, righteousness, the readiness of the gospel, faith, salvation, and the word of God?
- In verses 18-20 Paul places great emphasis on prayer. Why is prayer so necessary? (Hint: see verse 10.) Has your perspective about prayer or your motivation to pray changed because of this passage?
